A monitor arm helps improve ergonomics by allowing you to position your screen at a comfortable height, distance and angle. It can also free up valuable desk space, reduce clutter and make it easier to adjust your workstation for sitting, standing or shared-desk use.
VESA mounting is a standardised pattern of screw holes on the back of a monitor that allows it to attach to a monitor arm or wall mount. Common VESA patterns include 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm, although larger monitors may use different sizes.
The weight capacity depends on the specific monitor arm, with different models designed for lightweight, standard or heavy monitors. Always check that your monitor's weight falls within the arm's stated weight range, as exceeding the limit can cause the screen to sag or make the arm unstable.
Most monitor arms attach to the desk using either a clamp that grips the edge of the desktop or a grommet mount that passes through a hole in the desk. Once the base is secured, the arm is assembled, the VESA plate is attached to the monitor, and the screen position and tension are adjusted according to the manufacturer's instructions.
As a general ergonomic guideline, your monitor should be approximately an arm's length away, usually around 50–70 cm from your eyes. The exact distance can vary depending on screen size, resolution and eyesight, but text should be easy to read without leaning forward or straining.
