Match the table to the scale, height and style of the surrounding seating. The coffee table should generally sit around the same height as, or slightly lower than, the lounge seat, while its finish can either complement the furniture or provide a deliberate contrast using timber, laminate or metal finishes.
Allow approximately 400–450 mm between the coffee table and surrounding seating so users can comfortably reach the table while still having enough legroom. In busier commercial areas, additional clearance may be needed to maintain clear walkways and easy circulation.
Round and oval coffee tables are often ideal for smaller spaces because they have no sharp corners and allow people to move around them more easily. Compact rectangular or nesting tables can also work well where floor space is limited.
