Yes. A well-adjusted keyboard tray can improve ergonomics by positioning the keyboard and mouse at a height that allows your shoulders to stay relaxed, elbows close to your body and wrists in a straight, neutral position. Height- and tilt-adjustable trays are particularly useful when the desk itself cannot be adjusted to the correct working height.
An under-desk keyboard tray can free up valuable desktop space while allowing your keyboard and mouse to be positioned independently of the desk height. Adjustable models can improve typing comfort, encourage better posture and reduce excessive reaching. Retractable designs can also slide neatly beneath the desk when not required.
Your keyboard tray should be positioned close enough that you can type with your elbows comfortably beside your body without reaching forward. Your forearms should be approximately parallel with the floor and your wrists should remain straight. Avoid positioning the tray so close that your elbows are pushed backwards or so far away that you need to lean or reach forward.
Not necessarily. Compatibility depends on the available space beneath the desktop, the thickness and construction of the worktop, and whether frames, crossbars, drawers or other components obstruct the mounting track. For example, OFD's Standfirm Under Desk Keyboard Platform is designed for most standard office desks but requires sufficient underside clearance for its 23-inch retractable track.
Most under-desk keyboard trays are installed by positioning the mounting track beneath the desktop, marking and drilling suitable pilot holes where required, and securing the track with the supplied screws. The adjustment mechanism is then slid into the track and the keyboard platform attached to it. Any mouse platform, palm support or accessories can then be fitted before adjusting the tray's height and tilt. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and check the desktop thickness before drilling to avoid damaging the worktop.
